About the Setting
The Chretien pronounced “kray -ti-yahn,” Point Plantation was built of red brick in 1831-1835 and had two stories, twelve rooms and six large white columns. Up to five hundred slaves worked to produce cotton on the 4000 acres. The prairie before it is named “Buzzard’s Prairie” due to the large number of buzzards that roosted in the trees. The Bayou Bourbeau winds around behind the plantation house and the Bayou Carencro is on the opposite side of the prairie. Battles between General Franklin’s Union army and General Green's Confederate Cavalry took place on the prairie, around the house and Bayou Bourbeau.
